With the reputation of the physical sciences as being intimidating and difficult, our priority is to make chemistry more accessible and exciting to USM students by curating events that are designed to help educate as much as entertain. Through our STEM outreach events, we also work with local elementary schools to help instill an interest in chemistry at a young age, with the hope of helping encourage the next generation of scientists.

Active members are those who regularly attend meetings and participate in CBGSO events with appropriate notice for any absences. Their benefits include:

1. Vote on all matters brought before the organization.

2. Vote to approve purchases or transactions of CBGSO funds exceeding $500.

3. Vote in officer elections and impeachment proceedings.

4. Can veto decisions made by individual officers or the Executive Council by a majority vote of present and voting members.

5. Eligible to apply for funding opportunities that are exclusive to the CBGSO or related to active participation in its activities.

6. Eligible to run for officer positions (President, Vice President, Secretary).

Unassigned members have most rights of active members, but with funding limitations:

In 2022, a generous donor allocated $100,000 to be in a student-managed investment portfolio, and after working out policies, procedures, and structures over the past year, we are finally having in-person meetings this fall!

A little bit about us and how the Investment Portfolio works:

Throughout the semester, we have bi-weekly meetings with guest speakers discussing topics such as investing strategies, what to look for in a potential investment, monitoring the market, etc. Our investment fund is not intended to be a “cash cow” with instant profits, but it is instead aimed at long-term growth and success, as it is ultimately an educational tool for students to get started with investing.

As well as receiving insight from our guest speakers, members will monitor the market with a mock portfolio on Investopedia, and at the end of the semester, the student(s) have the opportunity to make a formal investment pitch to our external board of advisors. If the pitch is approved, the investment will be purchased! This is truly a great opportunity for our Southern Miss students, and we cannot wait to get started.

Our program focuses on leadership and workforce development. Our scholars have access to a personalized program tailored to help them make strategic choices during their time at Southern Miss.

Membership Benefits
- Scholars receive a $2,000 annual scholarship
- Campus employment with the Office of Undergraduate Scholarships provided for work-study eligible scholars (will pay out up to the max amount
awarded in SOAR)
- Individualized career and financial coaching through mentorship
- Leadership opportunities provided to upperclassmen within the program

Mission
This organization is for students who are entering into the medical laboratory profession. The mission of
the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) club includes the following three goals:
1. 2. 3. Introduce the concept of participation in a professional organization and the benefits of active
membership.
Further the interest in the profession and the education of those students pursuing a
professional career in MLS.
Inform the public of the essential role of medical laboratory professionals in the healthcare
setting.
It is the hope of the club that through these goals the MLS profession may be promoted, and light will be
shed on the essential function of the medical laboratory in diagnosis and treatment of patients.
